T he goal of our sangiovese is to make it differently than the usual California style and to emulate the Italian style.  We aim to achieve this by locating vineyards that produce intense fruit and to age the wine in large cooperage with less new oak influence.

TASTING NOTES

The wine is medium bodied and medium ruby in color with a pleasing roundness to it. It tastes of dark cherry and is well balanced with a long finish. It is a great wine with food and it will age extremely well.

THE VINEYARDS

The Vineyards: The wine was produced from Harry Merlošs Vineyard, a mountain side sight, in the hills of the Dry Creek Valley. This vineyard is rocky with thin soil which helped to tame the productive nature of sangiovese vines.

This particular vintage needed a blend with 20% merlot, picked from this same vineyard.

WINE MAKING NOTES

The most important thing was to get the fruit that expresses sangiovesešs positive characteristics such as suppleness in the mouth feel and its pure cherry fruit flavors. The merlot was needed to fill out the middle body. There was a seven day fermentation in open fermenters and it was punched down by hand, three times a day. The wine was gently pressed into 500 liter French puncheons and aged for a year.
